My mother who coined the word Choodle-umma-chum-chay was saddled at birth with the names Ivy Emily Matilda Gertrude at birth. All were family names, of course. As if to add insult to injury - Gertrude was spelt Gertrudge on her birth certificate!
She hated all the names but was usually known as Ivy by her friends and Gussie by my father.
When she married my father, the registrar after reading out her names, joked 'Did you ever forgive your mother for that?' It was no laughing matter to my mother. Her mother was present and what her view of the question was no one ever asked and my mother, although she never spoke of a preference would, I am sure, have preferred a name such as Ann, Margaret or Elizabeth.
However her mother was saddled with the middle name of Lucretia, which was not a family name, but which was and still is, a name which produces shivers with most people who think of Lucretia Borgia. Understandably Gran preferred it to be known her name was Leticia - not Lucretia.
