The English Succession by John Marchant (1749)
The Norman Conquest all historians fix
To the year of Christ, one thousand sixty-six.
Two Wills, one Henry, Stephen, Kings reckon;
Then rose Plantagenet in Henry second.
First Richard, John, third Henry, Edward three,
And second Richard in one line we see.
Fourth, fifth and sixth Lancastrian Henrys reign;
Then Yorkist Edward two, and Richard slain.
Next Tudor comes in seventh Henry's right,
Who the red rose engrafted on the white.
Eighth Henry, Edward sixth, first Mary, Bess;
Then Scottish Stuarts right the peers confess.
James, double Charles, a second James expelled;
With Mary, Will; the Anne the scepte held.
Last Brunswicks issue two Georges given;
Late may the second pass from earth to heavan!
[For those interested - Then George 3 and 4,
William 3 and Victoria
Edward 7, George 5, Edward 8, George 6
Elizabeth 2.]
