From my stats I see that I have more people in Australia reading my Blog than any other country in the world. So Hello Australia.
What a great time to be able to contact people virtually instantly - either by email but also by Skype. But what a pity people no longer write letters. Yes, the news is old by the time you or they receive it, but does anyone save and cherish emails the way we used to save letters?
What excitement there was when a letter from a distant friend or relative arrived in the post (is anyone writing private letters any more?) - and one put on the kettle to make a cup of tea, and settled down to reading the latest news from some well loved member of the family who lived at a distance. Then one would digest it, pass the news to the family, answer enquiries about the distant friend/relarion from acquaintances one met in the street, then settle down trying to remember what was new with you so that you could fill a return letter with something interesting.
Having lived in a distant country and far from home I can remember how wonderful it felt to 'hear' my mother talking to me as she told me her latest news in her letter.
It is so easy these days to become disconnected from people we have left behind - especially family - and go about living our separate lives and deal with lifes problems. Without letters they become part of the past and memories of them gradually fade away until you become almost like strangers and not the people who once loved each other so much. Their love may not have changed - but has yours?
This is not written to anyone in particular - just a general observation of the situation our modern technology has brought us to.
So, hello, Australia, or Canada, or Russia, or Brazil, or USA - pick up that pen and write to someone you love but who lives at a distance. Someone who would welcome a letter from you. Something tangible. Something they will keep and take out to read from time to time, which will keep them close to you.
No time for that? I don't believe one word of it. Be honest. Cannot be bothered is more likely.
