WHY DIDN'T I KNOW ABOUT THIS BEFORE?
I went into the chemist todasy to ask the pharmacist if he could suggest something foor dry, itchy eyes and he gave me some eye drops. I asked how much they cost and was surprised to hear him say they are free. He gave me a form to fill out to say I was entitled to free prescriptions - which I am because of my age and gave me the eye drops and a leaflet about the Think Pharmacy First Scheme which is being run up here. It's been running since 2009 - so why is it I have never heard of it?
I looked on the net and discovered the following:
People in North Tyneside, Newcastle and Northumberland are being encouraged to "think pharmacy first" this winter. The scheme is helping to remind local people that community pharmacies in their neighbourhood are a one-stop shop for minor ailments and illnesses including the cold, sore throat, , cold sores, stomach upset and indigestion or dyspepsia, discomfort during or after eating caused by some interference with the normal digestive process. Symptoms include nausea, heartburn, abdominal pain, gas distress, and a feeling of abdominal distention. and many more common problems.
Think Pharmacy First offers patients who qualify for free prescriptions, due to low income, the choice of going straight to their pharmacist for a consultation, advice and, if appropriate, treatment.
The campaign was launched in 2009 by NHS
This is the page listing what problems are covered.
North of
Tyne and now all the pharmacies in North Tyneside, Newcastle and Northumberland
