If you wake just before dawn and get up from your bed and look out through the window at the world, you will find that the motion and sounds of the day have disappeared. The world is silent and still and it feels as if you are the only living person in the world.
Obviously you are not alone because somewhere, ot there, there are people on night shift or in another time zone, and awake but at that moment - for you - everything is at a stand still. Unless you see some sign of movement or walk outside where you can hear the faint murmur of the world going about its business, you are isolated and it feels as if you are the only person left alive.
This feeling can even come to you at night when you are travelling through strange, seemingly uninhabited areas on long journeys by car. I felt it in the great expanse of night in Africa. Long, endless roads with only the car headlights showing the way - and beyond them - the world came to an end. Apart from the eternity of the stars above, all else is blackness.
Then you welcome that tiny spark of light off in the distance which tells you there is life still in this 'middle of this nowhere' - for it is like a message from someone saying 'I too am alive. I too am alone'.
But now, looking out of the window - you know - this is how it feels to be lonely.
Take someone's loneliness away today. Say hello.
