I remember reading the Water Babies by Charles Kingsley when I was a child. In the book he made the point through two characters named 'Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby' (do as you would be done by) and 'Mrs Bedonebyasyoudid' (be done by as you did) who were really the same person. This impressed me at the time and I have found it a good guide in life.
Almost all the major religions have something to say on Compassion.
The Buddha said:
Compassion is that which makes the heart of the good move at the pain of others. It crushes and destroys the pain of others; thus, it is called compassion. It is called compassion because it shelters and embraces the distressed.
The Dalai Lama:
My message is the practice of compassion, love and kindness. These things are very useful in our daily life, and also for the whole of human society these practices can be very important
You have to be a good person at heart to have compassion and it is not for you to judge your compassion - others will judge your compassion by your actions.
Someone once said of themselves 'I am a kindly person'.
'Really,' I said 'don't you think that is for others to say?'
Compassion is the same. You cannot say 'I am compassionate' - it is for others to form their own opinion when they see and hear of your actions and behaviour.
