My Diary Saturday 13 July 1963

Ian was very nervous about the forthcoming birth as he took me to the nursing home. He said he was amazed I could take it so calmly. Too late to change my mind now, I told him.
Doctor Woods arrived at about 10 and started inducing me at 10.30 and, surprisingly, stayed nearby throughout the whole day.
The small room I was in was next to the room they bring the newborn babies to weigh a second time and clean up so I had something to watch while I waited.Wasn’t allowed to eat all day so was starving hungry by the time I was wheeled out of the labour room into delivery.  Hardly any discomfort or pain until about 6 in the evening and H. was born at 6.55 pm weighing 7 lb 9 oz.
She is perfect and quite lovely. Doesn’t look newborn - probably because of her weight. Loads of dark hair. Loved her at first sight.
I was returned to the room where I had been induced and saw the nurse bring her in to clean her up etc and caught a sight of baby's face as she was being weighed  and she looked the image of  her father. She was crying at the time so her face was a little screwed up. I was amazed having heard that babies looked like their father for a short time after birth.
The babies are kept in the nursery throughout the day except for feeding time. The ward I am on has 4 beds. Today at the 2pm feed the nurse rolled three bassinets down the corridor to us and I could hear a baby crying and recognised H. cry but the nurse wheeled the bassinet to the woman opposite and then went back for the other baby.
While she was gone I said to the others that thought the one we had heard crying was mine. On the nurse’s return she brought a bassinet to me, but I, still feeling sure one of the other babies was mine,
examined the wrist label which did not have name McP....... written on it!
I told the nurse who got all flustered and looked at the name on the wrist of the baby in the bassinet opposite and hastily swopped them around with an apology.
Already I recognise her cry!
