Patient's report on treatment at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle

OH went in for a 'man's op. Excellent treatment and care. Nursing staff first class and very friendly. Food very good.

Pity the TV in the Day Room on Ward 1 - where OH and others waited 4 hours  before being allocated a bed - wasn't tuned in and only had upright chairs! Room could be made more comfortable.

For recovering patients, life in hospital can be very boring. If you think you are going to feel well enough soon after treatment take along something to pass the time ie book, crossword book, game, etc. Installing bed TVs was a great idea originally but, and it is a very big BUT, it  is very expensive. Can many people up here afford them? Does anyone use them?  Only one OH saw being used casued the patient and staff a lot of trouble!!!

Couple of patients a bit noisy and obstreperous at times - pity the poor nursing staff as they try to deal with them. Something going on on the floor above was rather noisy one night - furniture being moved about?

One problem is how visitors who live at a distance get to the hospital? Taxi from Whitley Bay costs between £11 and £14 one way! Yes, there are buses and the Metro but getting to them for some visitors can be a problem especially the elderly - travelling can be very tiring for them - not to mention the winter weather making it dangerous.

Take your mobile phone if you have one - at least the occasional phone call can break the boredom for the less ill patients - and your charger if you are going to be in for more than a couple of days. But make sure your mobile does not have an annoying jingle that blares out and disturbs the other patients otherwise you will not be popular.

A little advice to patients: Would those who like fresh air consider the others sharing the ward and ask them before insisting the window be kept open at all times.
