It is a pity that so many quasi family history researchers have turned family history into what my daughter calls 'a quagmire'. At one time the only people doing genealogical research were disciplined people with a genuine interest in gathering properly researched information about their family.
Nowadays - many of these - and I hesitate to use the word - 'researchers', are just anxious to find someone who more or less - and often it is less rather than more - fits someone in their family. They don't see any need to prove the connection for themselvces and make no effort to search the records which will prove or disprove the suggested connection. If someone has published their family details - it must be true. Right?
NO!!!!
The consequence is that many families being honestly researched by people who care about getting things right, are being stolen - and their family trees are being thrown into doubt because so many people are overwhelming the net with connections which are completely invalid. When I think of the years of patient research so many have put into researching their family line, it almost makes me want to cry.
The attitude these days is that as long as one can add a few titles that is all that matters - it's something to boast about - why do I have to prove it? As I've said before - heavan help the descendants who try to make head or tail of the family they thought had been properly researched.
Unfortunately many of these quasi researchers are making things difficult for the true researchers - who want to prove the connections so that their trees are accurate and cannot be questioned; and how 'umpty' some people can getwhen they are put straight about the many errors scattered generously in their trees. Do they correct them. No. They just start another line which is full of errors.
Bah! Humbug!
