Having carried out regular family history research for some years I am fully aware that much detail, concerning people living people in the UK, can easily be discovered on the internet these days. If you want you can send for the birth, marriage and death certificates of almost anyone registered in the UK and, despite the data laws, anything in the public domain is there for us all to view, if we so wish.
When I ran a one name study some researchers even went so far as to provide me with details of their family, whether living or dead, including, even though asked not to, their own personal details such as birth and marriage dates of their own family.
Therefore, when someone approaches me and asks me to help them research their family, which people often do, I help if I can, and sometimes pass on the details sent me by others. My presumption being that because one started things off by providing me with the nitty gritty of ones family without having their arm twisted behind their back, then one is trying to contact family members to share information. What other reason is there for sending me the details of a families births, marriages or deaths than passing the details on to someone else who is connected? That's the reaon we research our family history. Right?
So why do some people supply unasked for details about themselves and their family then complain when these details are disclosed to a third party who may be a member of the same family? This is something anyone could do for themselves, had they so wished?
