Civil and Public servants

An article by Nick Cohen in the Observer in October drew attention to the following:

When you read of Greece's travails, you realise how lucky we are in Britain to be free of endemic corruption. Our faith in the basic integrity of public life is a precious asset.

This is why our public servants are well paid and receive good pensions - we pay for their honesty and loyalty - unlike other countries where the public servant subsidises his wages by asking for and taking bribes.
Heaven help us if our public servants begin to feel so badly treated by employer and the public that they feel they are totally unappreciated and bribery becomes justifiable!
