Paphian nymphs and noble dukes

September 3rd 1810 (regarding a house being pulled down in North Shields):
It was believed this was an old house wherein, in the year 1705, the duke of Argyll, then a resident at Chirton, near North Shields, received so many bruises in a night of brawl or revel, as occasioned his death shortly thereafter. It was occupied by Paphian nymphs, and often resorted to by the noble duke.
