On the crossing

Monday is the day we do our big weekly shop. We use a local superstore in a shopping complex with zebra crossings from store to car park.
People coming out of the store walk straight out on to the crossing without looking left or right - expecting the cars to look out and stop for them. No-one approaches the crossing with their trolley and stops and waits for the traffic to see them and stop. Is this right?
If someone is already on the crossing, and a new customer approaches the kerb, that person also walks straight out and expects the cars to wait even when they have several steps to go before reaching the crossing.
No thanks - no acknowledgement. What's wrong with people?
