Extract from my diary 21 June 1984

Thursday 21 June 1984
Went to Corfu with H and S [a nurse who works with H] (a lovely girl). Good holiday - very hot - very close to beach but it was too hot on beach for me and I sunbathed on the balcony for much of the time and let the girls get on with planning their own day.
First night we were there we thought we could smell drains but next day realised the gas stove was turned on slightly and gas was leaking!!!  Fortunately no explosion.
Mosquitos a bit of a problem. Plumbing awful in the flat.
Corfu town smells because the sewage drains are virtually open and run along the sides of the road. Meat hanging in butchers shops was covered in flies.
We split food costs 3 ways. Food expensive in the local shop. The girls ran short of money near the end but I was happy to help them out. We existed on fresh fruit and vegetables and tinned goods which had to be imported. Girls hired a scooter a couple of times and went for a ride around.
We all came back very tanned. Missed J though.
