DIVORCE CASE: Maxwell received decree nisi. He to pay £40 pa to wife. During the course of preparations for the case, John Carr, (whose father formerly resided at Beccles) was sent to Beccles to visit Miss Bulwer, sister of Maxwell’s wife, and “as openly as it was possible to have an improper
intercourse with her, so that when she came to be a witness [she was] devoid of virtue, and of worthless testimony. He went as directed, but failed in his purpose.”
The learned Judge said he had no words with which to express his disgust and abhorrence at the defendant’s conduct.
